Fast-delivery platform Zepto is under fire after a former employee publicly alleged widespread hygiene violations, unsafe work conditions, and the routine dispatch of expired food items. The claims come shortly after the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended Zepto’s food license at its Dharavi facility in Mumbai, following a warehouse inspection that uncovered expired stock and fungal growth on food products.

The anonymous whistleblower, who claims to have worked at Zepto for three years, shared their experience on Reddit, stating, “I can’t stay silent anymore.” The post paints a disturbing picture of what allegedly goes on behind the scenes at the company.

According to the ex-employee, workers were instructed to pack expired items when fresh stock was unavailable. Rotten fruits and vegetables were reportedly delivered to customers instead of being discarded, with speed of delivery taking priority over quality.

Conditions inside the warehouses were also described as hazardous, especially during the monsoon. At a Zepto facility in Pune, the employee claimed that drain water would flood the packing area, forcing workers to continue operations in unsanitary conditions, often without safety gear or proper footwear. Several employees reportedly fell sick, but no medical support was provided.

The Reddit post quickly gained attention, prompting more users to share their own negative experiences, such as receiving spoiled eggsdelayed orders, and facing unresponsive customer service. Some customers claimed they had already stopped using the service due to repeated issues.

Earlier this month, the FDA conducted a raid at Zepto’s Dharavi warehouse and found expired food itemsimproper cold storage, and overall lack of hygiene, leading to the suspension of its food license at that location.

As of now, Zepto has not responded to the allegations made by the former employee.

The revelations have triggered a broader discussion about the transparency and safety standards in India’s growing quick-commerce sector, leaving many customers questioning how much they truly know about where their groceries come from.
