I Don’t Want My Son to Grow Up Like His Father": Teacher’s Final Plea Before Suicide
A tragic incident occurred in Vasundhara on Sunday, where a 29-year-old woman, Anvita Sharma, was found dead at her home. Anvita, a teacher at a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Delhi, sent a final WhatsApp message to her family before her death, revealing the emotional turmoil she had been enduring.
In her message, she expressed her inability to handle the constant criticism from her husband, who found fault with everything she did. She also criticized her in-laws, calling them a family that only “knows how to take.”
Following her death, two individuals, including her husband, were arrested in connection with the case. Her mother-in-law, Manju, is reportedly missing. Anvita’s last message to her husband, Gaurav Kaushik, poignantly summed up her distress: “I have prepared food, Gaurav Kaushik, please eat it.”
Kaushik, who practices in Delhi, and his father, Surendra Sharma, were arrested after Anvita’s family lodged a complaint accusing them of dowry harassment, the police reported on Monday. Kaushik, his father, and his mother, Manju, have been charged under various sections, including Section 85 (cruelty by the husband or his relatives), Section 80(2) (punishment for dowry death), Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing harm), Section 352 (intentional insult with the intent to provoke a breach of peace), and sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. According to Indirapuram ACP Abhishek Srivastava, the incident occurred around 1:30 pm on Sunday, while Kaushik and their son were out.
Upon receiving Anvita’s message, her family immediately tried to reach her, but their calls went unanswered. Concerned, they informed Kaushik, who returned home to find the door locked from the inside. In an attempt to get inside, they had to cut open the window grille, he said.
Anvita and Kaushik had been married since December 12, 2019, and had a four-year-old son together. Anvita worked as a PGT Fine Arts teacher at the school, a position she had held since October 2019. In her final message, Anvita expressed her frustration, stating, “He married my job, not me.” She described how her husband wanted a beautiful, hardworking wife who also had a career. Despite her efforts, nothing was ever enough for him. Anvita explained that her husband and in-laws expected her to focus solely on them, while her own family, particularly her parents and brother, were just as important to her. She mentioned that no mother-in-law had ever taunted her as much as her husband had in the past five years, criticizing everything she did. She also wrote that her in-laws “only wanted a working maid,” and she felt exhausted from pretending to be happy.
In her final message to her parents, Anvita expressed her deep love for her son and her concern for his future, stating, “My husband has access to my bank accounts, chequebook, and everything. Please take care of my child. I love him the most in this world, and I want him to be with you.” She added that she did not want her son to grow up like his father. Anvita’s father, Anil Sharma, filed a police complaint, which led to the registration of an FIR. He claimed to have spent 26 lakh rupees on the wedding and provided a variety of household items, as well as gold and silver jewelry, to his daughter’s in-laws.
Sharma also alleged that Kaushik and his family had asked for a four-wheeler during the wedding, and he complied by buying a blue Dzire. However, shortly after the marriage, Anvita’s husband, father-in-law, and mother-in-law began to abuse her both physically and mentally, demanding more dowry. According to Sharma, Anvita, who worked as a teacher at KV Dallupura, had her salary, chequebook, and ATM cards taken by her in-laws. When she asked for them back, she was reportedly physically assaulted and verbally abused. The abuse escalated on March 16, ultimately leading Anvita to write a suicide note and take her life in distress, as per Sharma’s statement.
