India to Get Its First Vande Bharat Sleeper: Full Route, Speed and Distance Details Inside
India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper promises Rajdhani-level comfort, Tejas-like speed, and next-gen technology for overnight travel.
Indian Railways is preparing to roll out its first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, and the inaugural route is set to be the busy Patna–New Delhi corridor. The new sleeper configuration designed for long-distance overnight travel — is in the final stages of preparation at the BEML factory in Bengaluru, with the first rake expected to be dispatched after December 12. Trial runs have begun, and Railways is aiming to start regular services before the New Year.
The Patna–Delhi Sleeper Vande Bharat will cover nearly 1,000 kilometres in just eight hours, operating at an impressive 160 kmph with a maximum capability of 180 kmph. Officials say the train’s stability is so advanced that even a cup of tea will remain steady at full speed.
This sleeper variant marks a major upgrade for passengers who currently rely on Rajdhani or other overnight trains on the route, offering a blend of comfort, speed, and premium technology previously available only on daytime chair-car Vande Bharat services.
In its initial rollout, the train will run six days a week, departing from Patna in the evening and reaching Delhi the next morning. The return service will follow the same overnight schedule, offering travellers a seamless end-to-end experience.
Built with rapid acceleration, quick braking, and modern controls, the train is expected to slash journey times significantly by reducing delays that usually happen during stop-and-go movements at stations.
Coach Composition And Capacity
The Vande Bharat Sleeper will run with 16 coaches and a total of 827 berths:
• 11 AC 3-tier coaches (611 berths)
• 4 AC 2-tier coaches (188 berths)
• 1 First AC coach (24 berths, fitted with luxury features)
Railways may increase the number of coaches later depending on demand.
The sleeper model has been developed in response to rising demand for comfortable overnight long-distance travel. Currently, 164 chair-car Vande Bharat trains run across India, but the sleeper version is expected to be the next major expansion of the premium fleet.
Comfort-Focused Passenger Features
To ensure a hotel-like travel experience, the sleeper train includes:
• USB-integrated reading lamps
• Real-time passenger information displays
• High-speed Wi-Fi and infotainment
• A modular pantry for fresh onboard meals
• Touch-free bio-vacuum toilets
• Hot water shower facility in First AC
• Ergonomic ladders for upper berths
• PRM-friendly berths and washrooms for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers
Advanced Safety Systems
The sleeper Vande Bharat incorporates multiple safety upgrades:
• KAVACH anti-collision technology
• Emergency talk-back communication units
• Fully sealed gangways to reduce dust and enhance safety
• Automatic plug doors that lock before the train starts
• CCTV cameras in every coach
These features aim to offer passengers a safer and more secure journey, especially during overnight runs.
Why This Train Could Be A Game-Changer
One of India’s busiest rail routes, the Patna–Delhi corridor sees massive demand year-round. The sleeper Vande Bharat aims to ease congestion, offer an upgraded alternative to Rajdhani Express, and provide a cleaner, faster and more restful experience.
For travellers heading to Delhi for work, medical needs, studies or festival seasons, the combination of speed, comfort and modern amenities makes this train an attractive option. Overnight travel also saves the cost of a hotel stay, while the reduced journey time allows for quicker turnaround trips.
A second rake is already under construction, ensuring uninterrupted daily operations once the service begins. Railways is expected to announce the official timetable, fare structure, and complete route details soon. For now, the launch is widely expected before the end of December, marking a major milestone in India’s premium train network.
