Indian Expats in UAE to Receive Smart Chip-Enabled E-Passports Under Passport Seva 2.0 Rollout
Excitement is building among Indian nationals living in the UAE as passport services take a major digital leap forward. The Consulate General of India in Dubai has officially launched the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP 2.0) — a new-age system that brings enhanced speed, security, and convenience to the passport application process.
The upgraded platform came into effect on Tuesday, 28 October 2025, promising to redefine how Indian expatriates manage their passport needs abroad.
With the launch of GPSP 2.0, applicants will now be issued e-passports embedded with electronic chips containing their digitised biometric data. These smart passports are expected to significantly accelerate immigration clearance procedures while strengthening data protection.
The initiative aligns with global standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), ensuring Indian travellers benefit from technology-driven efficiency and international compatibility.
The Consulate General emphasized that this initiative reflects India’s commitment to making passport services abroad more transparent, accessible, and efficient for its large overseas community in the UAE.

Faster Processing and Simplified Applications
The new GPSP 2.0 online platform offers a smoother experience for applicants. Users can now upload their documents, ICAO-compliant photographs, and signatures directly online, reducing the time spent at BLS Centres.
One of the most notable upgrades is the ability to make minor corrections directly at the BLS Centres without having to retype entire forms or pay any additional fees. The consulate has also advised applicants to review the ICAO photograph specifications carefully before submission to avoid delays in processing.
Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for Passport Services
1. Registration: Visit the new Passport Seva portal and register by clicking on the “Register” option.
2. Login and Application: Log in using the registered credentials and select the option to create a new passport application. Fill in all required details accurately.
3. Submission and Appointment: Once the online form is submitted, take a printout and book an appointment through the provided scheduling link.
4. Physical Visit: On the scheduled appointment date, visit the respective BLS International Centre with the printed form and all required supporting documents for verification.
According to the Consulate General of India in Dubai, GPSP 2.0 marks a significant milestone in the global modernization of India’s passport infrastructure. The transition to a digital, chip-enabled system represents a forward-thinking approach to safeguarding citizens’ data while ensuring faster, more reliable services.
