India’s First Cooperative Ride-Hailing App ‘Bharat Taxi’ Begins Pilot Operations in two states, 51000 drivers registered
A new chapter of competition has opened in India’s app-based taxi market with the launch of Bharat Taxi, the country’s first cooperative-model ride-hailing platform. Inspired by the Prime Minister’s vision of “Sahkar Se Samriddhi,” the service rolled out its pilot operations on Wednesday in Delhi and Gujarat, positioning itself as a direct challenger to established players like Ola, Uber, and Rapido.
Bharat Taxi is operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, supported by eight major cooperative organisations. Leading institutions such as Amul, IFFCO, NABARD and NDDB are among the primary promoters, giving the initiative strong institutional backing.
51,000 Drivers Register in Just 10 Days
During the first phase of the pilot, driver registrations began across Delhi and parts of Gujarat. Within just ten days, over 51,000 drivers have signed up on the platform. In Delhi, services including car, auto-rickshaw and bike taxis are now active, while registrations continue across the Saurashtra region in Gujarat. The cooperative model aims to provide commercial drivers with better income opportunities and reduce their dependence on private ride-hailing companies.
Zero-Commission Structure at the Core
According to Chairman Jayen Mehta, the biggest attraction of Bharat Taxi is its zero-commission structure. Drivers will receive the full fare from every ride, without any deductions. Any surplus earned by the cooperative will be redistributed among its members — the drivers themselves. Unlike private platforms that charge 20–30% commission, Bharat Taxi promises greater income stability and financial independence for drivers.
Passenger-Friendly Features
The platform also offers a modern, secure experience for passengers. Key features include transparent fare display, live trip tracking, multi-language support, 24/7 customer service, cash and digital payment options, and a safety tie-up with Delhi Police. To enhance convenience, the app is being integrated with metro and other public transit systems to enable seamless door-to-door connectivity.
Following a successful pilot, Bharat Taxi is expected to expand gradually across the country.
