Indian Railways operates extensively across the country, including a notable long-distance journey: the Vivek Express. This train runs from Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Meaning, it covers more than 4,000 km in four days. This service was announced in the 2011-12 Railway Budget, which celebrates Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary, reflecting the cultural significance of the route.
The journey spans nine states and includes 59 stops, with the train running twice weekly. Departing Dibrugarh at 7:25 PM on Tuesdays and Saturdays, it travels for continuous 75 hours, with the train stopping at 59 stations along the way. It then arrives in Kanyakumari at 10:00 PM on the fourth day.
The train consists of 19 coaches, designed to accommodate a significant number of passengers over its journey. While the long duration might pose challenges in comfort and tiresome experience, some passengers find the journey as an opportunity to enjoy watching diverse landscapes and cultures across India.
