IndiGo faced scrutiny after influencer Revant Himatsingka raised concerns about the sodium content in the airline’s in-flight meals. Himatsingka pointed out that dishes like Upma, Poha, and Daal Chawal served by IndiGo contained significantly higher sodium levels compared to Maggi noodles.

The airline defended its food offerings, stating that they serve only ‘fresh’ and ‘pre-packaged food’ sourced from reputable vendors. They emphasized that the salt content in pre-packaged products is within prescribed norms and provided on the packaging for passengers’ discretion.

Himatsingka highlighted the health risks associated with consuming excess sodium, including high blood pressure and heart issues, urging passengers to be mindful of their nutritional intake.

He added, “Just because ‘Upma’, ‘Poha’, ‘Daal chawal’ sound healthy, does not mean they are healthy. Always remember junk food pretending to be healthy is even more dangerous than junk food.”  His post gained significant traction on social media, sparking discussions about hidden sodium levels in seemingly healthy foods.

An X user added, “Considering the average person probably takes a few flights a year, it’s okay.”

Himatsingka said that Indians consume ‘too much sodium’ and regularly consuming excess sodium can result in high blood pressure, hypertension, heart issues and kidney issues.

Social media users expressed surprise and concern over the sodium content in in-flight meals, calling for greater transparency and awareness about nutritional information. The incident underscores the importance of informed food choices, even while traveling, to maintain a balanced diet and overall health.
