IndiGo Suspends Pune–Bangkok Flights for Summer, Leaves Air India Express as Sole Direct Operator
Pune’s international travel network is set to shrink this summer after IndiGo decided to withdraw its Pune–Bangkok service from the upcoming seasonal schedule. The airline has cancelled all ticket bookings for both the Pune–Bangkok and Bangkok–Pune sectors starting March 29, marking a temporary pause in operations on the route.
While announcing the move, IndiGo did not provide a detailed justification for suspending the service. The airline stated that the decision was made as part of “operational realignments,” without elaborating further on the specific factors involved.
With IndiGo stepping away from the route, passengers flying directly between Pune and Bangkok will now have only Air India Express as an option. Until now, both carriers were operating flights on this sector, offering travellers greater flexibility and competitive fares.
According to aviation analysts, the airline is currently reassessing several of its international services based on commercial sustainability and operational planning. Industry observers suggest that the Pune–Bangkok route may not have generated the level of passenger demand initially anticipated. As a result, maintaining operations on the sector may not have been financially viable for the airline during the summer season.
Aviation expert Dharyashil Vandekar explained that “carriers regularly review their seasonal slot usage and passenger loads, and if a particular route does not attract adequate demand, they may choose to withdraw services for commercial reasons.” He further noted that IndiGo could redeploy the aircraft assigned to this route to other destinations where demand trends are stronger.
At present, Pune Airport maintains international links to Dubai, Bangkok, and Abu Dhabi. The suspension of one of its Bangkok operators is being viewed as a setback for the city’s expanding global aspirations. This development comes at a time when expectations were high following the inauguration of the airport’s new terminal, which had fueled hopes for broader international connectivity.
The exit of one competitor from the Pune–Bangkok sector could also impact travellers directly. With only a single airline operating non-stop services on the route, passengers may experience fewer scheduling options and potentially higher fares due to reduced competition.
