DGCA asks airlines to avoid West Asia airspace; PV Sindhu, Sonal Chauhan stranded in Dubai
Escalating tensions between Iran and Israel have triggered major disruptions in global aviation, with hundreds of flights cancelled and several Indian routes to the Gulf, Europe and North America affected.
The situation intensified after the United States and Israel carried out strikes on Iran. In retaliation, Iran reportedly fired missiles at targets in Israel and parts of the Gulf. The conflict has led to widespread airspace restrictions across the Middle East.
400+ Flights Cancelled
India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation said that 410 domestic carrier flights were cancelled on February 28 due to airspace restrictions over Iran and neighbouring regions. Around 444 additional cancellations were expected on March 1.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has advised Indian airlines to avoid flying over the airspace of Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman until further notice.
Passengers have been urged to check their flight status with airlines before leaving for the airport.
International Routes Affected
Air India cancelled 28 international flights scheduled for March 1, connecting Indian cities to London (Heathrow and Gatwick), New York (JFK), Newark, Chicago, Toronto, Frankfurt and Paris. The airline said it is assisting affected passengers with alternative arrangements.
SpiceJet cancelled 33 flights to and from the United Arab Emirates till March 2.
IndiGo issued a travel advisory stating that it is closely monitoring developments and remains prepared to take necessary steps. Several flights from Kochi to Doha, Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi were cancelled, delayed or diverted.
Qatar Airways temporarily suspended flights to and from Doha after Qatari airspace was closed amid the strikes.
Delhi Airport also issued an advisory, warning that westbound international flights may face delays or schedule changes due to ongoing developments in the Middle East. Chennai Airport reported similar disruptions.
Celebrities Stranded In Dubai
Olympic medalist P. V. Sindhu and actress Sonal Chauhan are among those stranded at Dubai International Airport due to flight cancellations. Sindhu shared updates on social media, while Sonal Chauhan reportedly appealed for assistance amid the travel uncertainty.
Senior Iranian Leaders Killed
Amid the conflict, Iranian state TV reported that Iran’s armed forces chief of staff Abdolrahim Mousavi was killed along with other senior officials during US and Israeli strikes. Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, Revolutionary Guards chief Mohammad Pakpour and defence council head Ali Shamkhani were also listed among those killed during a Defence Council meeting.
The rapid escalation has prompted several countries to impose airspace restrictions, impacting global flight operations and international travel plans.
Passengers travelling to or from Dubai, London, Mumbai and other international destinations have been advised to remain alert for updates and stay in close contact with their respective airlines.
