Is July 7 a Holiday? Check If Schools, Banks, Markets & Stock Exchanges Are Closed
As July approaches, there’s growing anticipation around whether Monday, July 7, 2025, will be declared a public holiday across India. While the date is not marked as an official holiday in the current calendar, there’s a possibility it may be announced based on moon sighting related to Muharram, the Islamic New Year. If it is declared, it would offer a welcome three-day weekend for many, stretching from Saturday to Monday.
At present, Muharram is scheduled for Sunday, July 6, 2025. However, since Islamic dates depend on lunar sightings, the actual day of observance can shift. If the crescent moon is not visible on July 6, the first day of Muharram could fall on Monday, July 7. In such a case, the government may officially declare it a public holiday.
If Muharram is indeed observed on July 6, which is a Sunday, it overlaps with the weekend. This would mean no extra day off for schools, colleges, offices, or banks on Monday. However, if it moves to July 7, most government institutions and private sectors—including schools, colleges, post offices, government departments, and banks—are expected to shut down for the day.
For those planning travel or personal events, the situation remains unclear. If you’re hoping for a long weekend, it’s wise to wait for official confirmation or apply for leave in advance to avoid last-minute disruptions. It’s worth noting that Maharashtra, among other states, has clarified that if Muharram falls on Sunday, July 6, educational institutions and government offices will function as usual on Monday.
Muharram is a significant religious occasion, marking the first day of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is widely observed across the country, especially in states like West Bengal, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. Regional and local authorities are expected to make announcements closer to the date. Parents are advised to keep an eye on school circulars and district-level updates for final decisions.
The observance of Muharram affects more than just schools and government offices. Trading activities on India’s major stock exchanges—the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE)—will remain suspended on Muharram. This includes equities, derivatives, currency and interest rate instruments, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB).
Additionally, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain closed for morning trading on Muharram. However, evening session trading will resume from 5:00 PM to 11:30/11:55 PM, depending on the segment. Public banking services will also be impacted, so citizens are encouraged to complete urgent transactions by Saturday, July 5.
Muharram holds deep spiritual significance for the Muslim community, especially for Shia Muslims. The tenth day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is a solemn occasion that commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Observances include mourning processions, special prayers, and religious gatherings, making it a day of profound importance.
While the final confirmation about the public holiday on July 7 depends on moon sighting, people across the country are already adjusting plans around this uncertainty.
