Kerala Education Ministry Embraces AI to Revolutionize Public Education
On Sunday, February 18, 2024, V. Sivankutty, Minister of General Education, unveiled plans for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in public education, marking a significant leap towards enhancing teaching and learning standards in the state. The initiative aims to harness the potential of AI to narrow the learning gap and unlock the untapped potential of students.
The announcement, made during the valedictory ceremony of a Thiruvananthapuram camp for members of little KITEs IT clubs under Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) at St. Roch’s High School, emphasized the transformative role AI is poised to play in education. Minister Sivankutty highlighted how AI will revolutionize the new school curriculum and complement the activities of Little KITES, underscoring its pivotal importance in shaping the future of education.
Accompanying Minister Sivankutty were key figures including KITE Chief Executive Director K. Anvar Sadath, State Council of Educational Research and Training Director Jayprakash R.K, and Samagra Shiksha Kerala Project Director Supriya A.R., who echoed the sentiment of embracing AI to bolster educational endeavors.
KITE’s proactive measures include the development of activity books designed to equip students with the skills necessary to utilize high-tech equipment effectively, encompassing areas such as graphics, animation, visual programming, robotics, and Internet of Things devices. The upcoming two-phase district camps, involving nearly 1200 selected students, signify the first step towards realizing the vision of AI-enabled education, with state-level camps scheduled for May 2024.
This strategic move underscores Kerala’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technologies to transform its educational landscape, ensuring students are equipped with the requisite skills to thrive in an AI-driven future.
