Pune, July 28, 2024 – Adv. Krunnal Gharre has filed a significant legal case against several key district authorities, including the Pune District Collector Office, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune Zilha Parishad, and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), for their voluntary neglect in addressing the severe pollution in the River Pavana.

The case, filed with the National Green Tribunal (NGT), seeks comprehensive restitution of the River Pava, citing a detailed series of prayers based on Gharre’s successful experience with the Ram Nadi restoration project. Gharre, in collaboration with local residents, the Bhugaon Bhukum Gram Panchayat, and the PMC, has achieved a sewage-free 6 km stretch of the Ram Nadi, setting a precedent for effective river rejuvenation efforts.

The NGT case highlights several critical issues:

Balwadkar

1. Voluntary Inaction by Officials: Despite previous court orders, the authorities have failed to execute necessary measures to curb pollution in the River Pavana.

2. Unplanned Development: The PMRDA has been granting permissions for development projects without ensuring the presence of basic infrastructure on the ground, leading to environmental degradation and immense distress for the citizens.

3. Lack of Accountability: There is a significant lack of accountability and coordination among the district authorities, resulting in persistent environmental issues and violations of existing environmental regulations.

Adv. Krunnal Gharre’s legal action emphasizes the urgent need for systemic changes and stricter enforcement of environmental laws to protect the River Pavana and the health and well-being of Pune’s citizens. This case aims to hold the authorities accountable and ensure a sustainable and pollution-free future for the region.
