PMPML employees have launched an indefinite strike from 3 AM today at the Hadaspar bus depot in response to unmet demands. The strike has received support from the Shiv Sena.

Despite repeated requests in recent days, the administration has not addressed the justice demands of employees at Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). Under the leadership of Pramod Bhangire, a committee of employees has initiated the strike.

The employees’ main three demands are:

1. Immediate payment of the arrears of the 7th Pay Commission.

2. Regularization of temporary daily wage workers who have been in service for six years.

3. Timely promotions for employees.

Due to the failure to address these demands, all PMPML unions have united to form an action committee under Pramod Bhangire. On July 22, 2024, the committee issued a notice stating that if their demands were not met, all 15 depots in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad would be shut down. However, the administration did not respond to this notice. Consequently, the PMPML employees have now resorted to a strike as a last resort.

Millions of citizens in Pune rely on PMPML bus services daily, including school and college students and working individuals. The cessation of these services will result in significant inconvenience, for which the PMPML administration will be held entirely responsible.

Letters regarding this issue have been sent to various authorities including the Pune District Collector, Pune Police Commissioner, Swargate Police Station, SP Office, and PMPML administration through Shiv Sena Pune. Additionally, previous correspondence regarding the strike was made with PMPML administration on July 10, 2024. The authority to regularize temporary workers lies with the Managing Director, Nitin Narvekar. In February this year, PMPML’s President and Managing Director provided a written response promising to regularize temporary employees, but this has not been implemented. Consequently, PMPML employees have taken up the indefinite strike.
