The electric crematorium in Dhobighat area in Pune Cantonment Board limits has got a new lease of life due to the initiative taken by Lions Club of Bibvewadi.

The 30-ft-height MS chimney collapsed due to heavy winds on 22.04.2022. The exhaust blower system was damaged.

The Electric Crematorium at Muktidham, Dhobighat was installed and commissioned in 2003. It is an electric furnace and operates on continuous supply of electricity and it is required to maintain the temperature of furnace from 650 degrees Celsius to 680 degree Celsius. Over a period, it was observed that the furnace structure deteriorated and internal heat was leaking. The 30-ft height chimney developed rust and deteriorated at base plate and foundation. It was necessary to make necessary changes in the system, as per norms of pollution control board. There was also a demand from public to install additional furnace in view of increase in load on the existing furnace.

Lions Club of Pune, Bibvewadi submitted a proposal to develop new CNG/PNG crematorium at the existing building of Muktidham to serve the public of Pune Cantonment and Pune city.

Accordingly, detailed survey was carried out by the manufacturer of electric furnace and following were the observations:-

·       The existing building of electric crematorium is too small to accommodate additional furnace and its accessories.

·       There is no vacant space for construction of new building and the cost involved will be too high.

·       The existing set up of electric crematorium is too old and the spares are not easily available.

·       The 30-feet-high chimney needs urgent replacement. Air pollution control system needed to be installed.

·       It is possible to install two new CNG-based furnaces in the existing building of electric crematorium after dismantling the old electric furnace.

·       The furnace shall be compatible for both CNG and LPG gas.

·       There is huge demand from the residents and PCB members to install two furnaces because the waiting period at crematorium has been increased tremendously either due to rush or due to technical problems. The existing crematorium is breaking down frequently and the board has been constrained to shut down the same for more than eight to ten days periodically due to overload, wear and tear of machineries which is causing inconvenience to the public. Hence an additional furnace will cater to the needs of residents of Pune Cantonment and nearby areas.

The gas-based furnaces for cremation of human bodies plays a vital role in reducing the air pollution, ETPs for reducing the water pollution. It also reduces the dependency on electric supply. These furnaces can cause very high impact on environmental upgradation by reducing carbon footprints. The demand for wood has been reduced drastically for cremation of human bodies which is costlier option as compared to gas-based cremation. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board also suggested increasing the Gas / Electric crematorium wherever possible. Particularly during the pandemic period, the need for gas-based cremation in enclosed area is essential.

LIONS CLUB OF PUNE, BIBWEWADI will provide following infrastructural development at Muktidham –

The infrastructure will be as per latest and suitable technology for existing building through their vendor and handover the asset after completion of the work.

The work will be completed in 4 to 6 months.
