Pune’s poetry scene has been going strong, especially since the pandemic happened.
With poetry clubs, open mics and literary communities established in almost every corner of the city, the space is thriving with young and expert talents all around us.
Several programmes may be held in the city which has given so rich in literature.
Nukkad Cafe located in Viman Nagar is one such community space where artists, writers and poets of all kinds have found a sanctuary ever since its inception in 2015. Awarded as the Best Book Cafe in 2022, it provides an atmosphere for readers, foodies, workers and creatives alike. The cafe hosts regular poetry, art, music and book events surrounded by the delicious aroma of food.
In another such mesmerizing event, Nukkad Cafe is set to host a day-long forum on poetry on the occasion of World Poetry Day on March 21st. Scheduled this weekend on the 19, the event will cover poetry in all forms and experiences.
The first session, Young Voices, hosted by Tanisha Kale is principally held for teenagers and young adults aged ten to eighteen. It is also free of cost to attend, followed by paid sessions.
Haiku Splash for Japanese poetry lovers, hosted by Kaushal Suvarna. Spoken Word Poetry is facilitated by Saad Ahmed and is for poets who write in and perform in English only.
Performance Poetry hosted by Sonali Rasal covers the art of diction and elocution in poetry.
The Special Performances section is for the Hosts to enamour you with their words and the final showdown is Theatre Poetry which deals with the little facet of human emotions.
Vaibhav Paliwal of Nukkad Cafe says that all these hosts are regular participants of the cafe’s numerous events. All of them have been poets themselves for a long time, and come from a variety of backgrounds- from LGBTQ+ activists, published authors, storytellers to whatnot. He remarks that the pandemic brought in a larger audience for poetry even with the online sessions, for people discovered a new zeal in expressing themselves artistically at the ease of their homes. This audience has gone on and becomes a valuable addition to their community now.
Nukkad means corner or just around the corner. Nukkad Cafe too strives to serve the purpose of its name by providing a corner for creative and ingenious minds of all kinds.
