LPG Cylinder Rules May Change From May 1: OTP Delivery, Booking Gap Under Discussion
Govt Cuts Ujjwala Subsidised LPG Cylinders To 4 from 9 a Year Amid Rising Global Fuel Costs
Fresh reports suggest oil marketing companies are considering changes in LPG cylinder booking and delivery systems from May 1. The proposals may include OTP-based delivery and a minimum gap between bookings.
Households using LPG cylinders may soon see changes in the booking and delivery process, with reports indicating that Indane, Bharat Gas and HP Gas are reviewing new rules amid global supply concerns.
While no final nationwide announcement has been officially confirmed yet, discussions around revised systems have drawn attention because they could affect how millions of families book monthly cylinders.
What Changes Are Being Discussed?
OTP-Based Delivery System
One of the key proposals is to make OTP verification mandatory for every cylinder delivery.
Under this system, once the cylinder is out for delivery, an OTP would be sent to the customer’s registered mobile number. The delivery would be completed only after the code is shared with the delivery executive.
The move is aimed at preventing fraud, wrong deliveries and unauthorised transactions.
25-Day Gap Between Bookings
Another reported proposal is a minimum 25-day gap between one booking and the next refill request.
If implemented, customers may not be able to immediately rebook another cylinder before the cooling period ends.
This could especially affect large families or households with high monthly gas usage.
Why Are These Changes Being Considered?
The discussions come amid concerns over global fuel supply disruptions, especially around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil and gas shipments.
India imports a large portion of its LPG requirements. Any international disruption can affect costs, availability and supply planning.
India’s LPG Supply Position
India reportedly requires around 80,000 tonnes of LPG daily, while domestic production meets only part of that demand. The remaining requirement is covered through imports.
To diversify supply, India has expanded purchases beyond Gulf nations and sources LPG from countries such as the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria and Russia.
What Consumers Should Do Now
At present, consumers should continue following existing booking systems unless official notifications are issued by their gas provider.
Users should also ensure their mobile number is updated with the gas agency, as OTP-based systems depend on correct contact details.
Important Clarification
These changes are currently being discussed in media reports. Final implementation, timelines and exact rules will depend on official announcements by government authorities or oil marketing companies.
