Government says there is no nationwide crisis, but restaurants and businesses face supply disruptions amid global fuel tensions.

Concerns over the availability of commercial LPG cylinders have emerged in several Indian cities as supply disruptions linked to global energy tensions begin to affect the hospitality sector. Hotels, restaurants and food businesses in cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata have reported difficulties in obtaining commercial gas cylinders, forcing some eateries to reduce menu items or temporarily scale down operations.

Oil companies, however, maintain that domestic LPG supply for households remains stable and has been prioritised to ensure that kitchen needs of families are not affected.

According to officials from Bharat Petroleum, domestic consumers are being given preference as LPG supplies are rationed in response to global energy market disruptions. The government has also directed refineries to increase LPG production by around 10 percent in order to stabilise supply.

The shortage concerns have been linked to the ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have disrupted fuel logistics and affected energy supply chains across several countries.

LPG Cylinder Prices In Maharashtra Cities

Recent data shows variations in domestic and commercial LPG cylinder prices across several cities in Maharashtra.

  • Ahilyanagar: Domestic ₹926.50 | Commercial ₹1,925.00
  • Akola: Domestic ₹933.00 | Commercial ₹1,965.00
  • Amravati: Domestic ₹946.00 | Commercial ₹1,994.50
  • Aurangabad: Domestic ₹921.50 | Commercial ₹1,941.00
  • Bhandara: Domestic ₹973.00 | Commercial ₹2,071.00

The higher prices for commercial cylinders have increased operational costs for the hospitality sector, especially small restaurants and roadside eateries that rely heavily on LPG for cooking.

Impact On Institutions And Businesses

The effects of the supply pressure are now being felt beyond restaurants. In Chennai, the Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute has announced that regular classes will remain suspended until March 25, with teaching temporarily shifted to online mode due to difficulties related to the LPG situation.

Hospitality associations in several cities have warned that if commercial cylinder supplies are not restored soon, more hotels and restaurants may be forced to limit services or shut down temporarily.

Despite these concerns, government officials have reiterated that India is not facing a nationwide LPG crisis. Authorities say the situation is being closely monitored and steps are being taken to maintain steady supplies and prevent panic among consumers.
