Luxury Look Sparks Controversy: Bageshwar Baba Criticised for Designer Outfit During Australia Tour
Popular spiritual leader Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, widely known as Bageshwar Dham Baba, has landed in the middle of a social media storm—not for his sermons, but for his recent public appearance abroad. While on a religious tour in Australia, images of the young seer wearing designer sunglasses and a fashionable jacket aboard a flight and later on a luxury cruise have triggered widespread online criticism.
The backlash intensified as the images surfaced just days after the tragic Ahmedabad plane crash that claimed over 274 lives. Many questioned the timing and tone-deafness of such displays of opulence by a spiritual figure during a period of national mourning.
From Humble Saint to Jet-Set Guru?
Social media users quickly drew comparisons between Baba’s earlier, humble image—seated on plastic chairs under tents while drawing name slips for devotees—and his current jet-setting, brand-conscious look. “From plastic chair to private cruise—saint or superstar?” read one viral post, encapsulating the sentiment of many critics.
The change in image has led some to question whether Baba’s rising fame is shifting his focus from spirituality to celebrity status.
Baba Defends: “They Were Gifts, Not Purchases”
Amid mounting criticism, Shastri addressed the issue during a recent Katha in Fiji. Refuting the claims of indulgence, he clarified, “To the person who posted that video—listen carefully. If you’re upset over my jacket and glasses, know this: they weren’t bought. They were gifted by devotees.”
He also stressed that the donations he receives (Dakshina) are used for charitable work. “We are building a cancer hospital, we are helping poor girls. The money is for service, not luxury,” he asserted, urging followers to ignore “worthless negativity.”
Supporters Rally, Critics Persist
While Baba’s explanation has calmed some supporters—who say the outrage is rooted in envy—many others remain unconvinced. “He’s doing good work, building hospitals and empowering the poor. What’s wrong if people gift him things?” asked one devotee online.
However, critics continue to call for accountability. “He’s not just a speaker—he’s a public figure with influence. In times of national grief, he should lead by example,” wrote another user.
A Polarising Figure
This isn’t the first time Bageshwar Baba has been at the centre of controversy. His rapid rise to fame—fueled by large gatherings, claims of miracles, and close proximity to political leaders—has long drawn both admiration and skepticism.
Whether this latest episode affects his standing in the public eye remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Bageshwar Baba is no longer just a spiritual voice—he’s a lightning rod in India’s ever-blurring line between faith and fame.
