Maharashtra Bike Taxi Plan Triggers Protest Threat; Union Warns Of Statewide Protest
Mumbai, July 8, 2026: The Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha has strongly opposed the state government’s proposal to allow bike taxi services, warning that any such move would severely impact the livelihoods of lakhs of auto-rickshaw, taxi and cab drivers across Maharashtra.
In a press statement issued on Monday, the organisation criticised the remarks made by the state’s Transport Minister in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, alleging that the minister had contradicted his earlier stand against bike taxi operators.
According to the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, the Transport Minister had previously assured strict action against illegal bike taxi services, including the registration of FIRs, seizure of vehicles and enforcement against companies violating transport regulations. The organisation claimed that the latest indication of permitting bike taxis marks a complete reversal of that position.
The workers’ body said that auto-rickshaw, taxi and cab drivers across the state have repeatedly staged protests against bike taxi services, arguing that such a policy would threaten the livelihoods of lakhs of transport workers and their families.
The Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha warned that if the state government proceeds with legalising bike taxi services, it will launch a statewide chakka jam (road blockade) agitation. It further stated that the government would be solely responsible for any situation arising out of the protest.
The organisation has urged the state government to immediately clarify its stand and withdraw any proposal that it says is against the interests of auto-rickshaw, taxi and cab drivers. Failing this, it said it would announce the next phase of its agitation.
The statement was issued by Dr. Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, President of the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha.
