Maharashtra Extends HSRP Deadline to April 30; Introduces Three-Zone System to Speed Up Installation
Mumbai, February 18, 2025: The Maharashtra State Transport Department has extended the deadline for High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) installation to April 30, 2025. The decision comes in response to the slow pace of compliance across the state, particularly in Pune, where over 25 lakh vehicle owners are yet to install the mandated plates.
As per the Supreme Court’s directive, HSRP installation is compulsory for all vehicles manufactured before 2019. However, the response from vehicle owners has been sluggish. In Pune, only 15,000 to 16,000 applications have been submitted, with just 7,000 to 8,000 vehicles receiving the updated plates so far.
To expedite the process, the Transport Department has categorized all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) into three zones:
- Zone 1 (12 RTOs): Borivali, Thane, Panvel, Kolhapur, Pune, Nanded, Amravati, Washim, Yavatmal, Nagpur (East), Nagpur (West), Ichalkaranji
- Zone 2 (18 RTOs): Mumbai Central, Mumbai (East), Vasai, Kalyan, Pen (Raigad), Ratnagiri, Malegaon, Nandurbar, Satara, Phaltan, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Vaijapur, Wardha, Nagpur (Rural), Gondia, Gadchiroli
- Zone 3 (27 RTOs): Mumbai (West), Vashi (Navi Mumbai), Sindhudurg, Ahilyanagar, Nashik, Shrirampur, Dhule, Jalgaon, Bhadgaon, Chalisgaon, Sangli, Karad, Akluj, Baramati, Beed, Jalna, Ambajogai, Latur, Udgir, Dharashiv, Parbhani, Hingoli, Akola, Buldhana, Khambgaon, Bhandara, Chandrapur
State transport officials believe that the zonal classification will help streamline and accelerate the HSRP installation process. All RTOs have been directed to ensure a smooth transition before the revised deadline.
