Maharashtra Government Likely To Launch Water Tourism Initiative Around 100 Dams
Pune, October 23, 2025: The Maharashtra government has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop water tourism across 100 dams in Pune and Western Maharashtra. Spearheaded by the Water Resources Department under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the initiative aims to transform scenic reservoirs into vibrant hubs for leisure and adventure tourism.
Bhosari constituency MLA Mahesh Landge posted on his X handle about the initiative. He said, “Under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Water Resources Department has launched a new initiative to promote eco-friendly water tourism across 100 dams in Pune and Western Maharashtra. Surrounded by scenic mountain landscapes, these reservoirs offer ideal locations for boating, water sports, and leisure tourism. The development plans focus on major dams including Khadakwasla, Pavana, Mulshi, Bhama Askhed, Andhra, and Kasarsai in Pune; Ujani in Solapur; Radhanagari in Kolhapur; Koyna in Satara; and Warna in Sangli. “
These sites, surrounded by picturesque mountains, are considered ideal for boating, water sports, and recreational activities.
The project envisions a comprehensive tourism ecosystem with boating facilities, water adventure parks, resorts, restaurants, art and craft centers, ropeways, and camping zones. Public-Private Partnership (PPP) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) models will be used to ensure sustainable development while attracting private investment.
Private tourism consultants have been appointed to evaluate the feasibility of each site and identify potential investors. The Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) will oversee planning and implementation across five districts, coordinating with local authorities to ensure smooth execution.
Officials expect the initiative to boost rural employment, generate new revenue streams, and enhance tourism infrastructure. By blending natural beauty with adventure and economic opportunities, the government aims to position Maharashtra’s dams as key attractions for both domestic and international tourists.
