Ban on sale of high-caffeine energy drinks near schools in Maharashtra
The Maharashtra government is set to enforce a ban on the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks within a 500-meter radius of schools. Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Dharmarao Baba Atram, announced this decision to safeguard student health by limiting caffeine intake among young individuals.
The announcement came during the ‘Question Hour’ in response to an inquiry by independent legislator Satyajeet Tambe. Minister Atram highlighted that both carbonated and non-carbonated drinks would be subject to regulation. “As per the existing rules, caffeine content between 145 ml and 300 ml is allowed in one liter of these beverages,” Atram stated, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to these limits.
The directive will be issued promptly to ensure swift enforcement around educational institutions. The measure is designed to restrict students’ access to high-caffeine energy drinks. These high-caffeine energy drinks pose significant health risks especially, for children.
Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe has instructed Minister Atram to compile a comprehensive list of the drinks to be banned. “Circulate it with the FDA officials across the state for effective implementation of the order,” Gorhe directed.
This proactive step reflects the government’s commitment to promoting healthier environments for students and mitigating the potential adverse effects of excessive caffeine consumption.
