10 July, 2026: The Central government has renewed its appeal for water conservation by promoting rainwater harvesting through its ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, encouraging citizens to make the most of the monsoon season by storing rainwater and reducing dependence on groundwater.

In a social media post shared by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the government highlighted the importance of rainwater harvesting in addressing water scarcity and ensuring long-term water security. The message described rainwater as a valuable natural resource and urged people not to let it go to waste.

The post stated that adopting rainwater harvesting practices can help recharge groundwater, reduce water shortages, strengthen water security, and contribute to a more sustainable future. It also emphasized that “every drop saved today creates a stronger tomorrow.”

Accompanying the message was an educational infographic explaining how a basic rooftop rainwater harvesting system works. The illustration showed rainwater flowing from rooftop gutters through a filtration unit before being stored in a collection tank. It also highlighted key components such as downpipes, sediment filters, overflow outlets, and storage reservoirs.

The campaign outlined several benefits of rainwater harvesting, including:

  • Reducing household water bills
  • Recharging groundwater reserves
  • Improving water security
  • Supporting sustainable water management

The infographic carries the slogan “Save Rain Today, Secure Tomorrow” and encourages citizens to “Catch It. Store It. Save It.”

The government’s awareness drive comes during the monsoon season, when large parts of the country receive substantial rainfall, making it an ideal time for households, institutions, and communities to adopt rainwater harvesting systems.

The ‘Catch the Rain’ initiative is part of the Centre’s broader efforts to promote water conservation and encourage public participation in sustainable water management across India.
