In a proactive move to empower female students with self-defense skills, the Maharashtra government has rolled out a comprehensive martial arts training program across public and private schools in the state.

This initiative comes as a response to recent concerning incidents, including the tragic murder of a student in a Mumbai hostel.

Under the directives of the Maharashtra State Women’s Policy 2014, which advocates for the empowerment and protection of women’s rights, girl students will undergo a three-month self-defense training regimen. The program aims to equip approximately 1.5 crore girls in the state with essential martial arts techniques.

An administration officer of the education dept has initiated communication with directors of primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, emphasizing the importance of implementing this program. A circular outlining the program’s details will be disseminated by the director’s office, with clear instructions for divisional offices to organize karate training sessions within their jurisdictions.

This concerted effort underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a safer environment for female students and aligns with broader initiatives to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
