Pune | June 24, 2025:
Local body elections in Maharashtra, including the crucial municipal corporations of Mumbai, Thane, and Pune, are likely to be delayed once again, with the next possible window now expected after Diwali 2025. Despite earlier expectations that elections would be held by October, revised timelines for ward delimitation have pushed the electoral process further back.

Following a Supreme Court directive mandating that long-pending local body elections be held by October 2025, the Maharashtra government had initiated the ward delimitation process and released a schedule accordingly. However, on June 23, the state’s Urban Development Department issued a fresh order extending deadlines for the submission of delimitation reports across various civic bodies.

New Timeline for Ward Delimitation Reports:

  • Mumbai Municipal Corporation: Final report submission by October 6, 2025
  • Class D Municipal Corporations (Small & Medium-sized): By October 13, 2025
  • Municipal Councils & Nagar Panchayats: By September 30, 2025

Officials including district collectors, the Mumbai municipal commissioner, and chief officers of municipal councils have been instructed to submit their reports within the revised deadlines.

The extension means that the elections, already delayed for several years, will not be held before October. As a result, the likelihood of polls taking place after Diwali has significantly increased.

Once the draft delimitation reports are submitted, they will be published for public feedback. The process will include inviting objections and suggestions, holding hearings, and only then finalizing ward structures. These steps must be completed before the State Election Commission can issue a final election schedule.

With the festive season approaching and administrative timelines being pushed further, citizens across the state may now have to wait until late 2025 to cast their votes for their local representatives.
