Maharashtra: Pesticide Traces Found In Popular Tea Brand Samples, Triggers Statewide InspectionÂ
Nashik: Traces of pesticides have been discovered in samples of Sapat tea powder, a popular tea brand, creating widespread concern. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Nashik had collected these samples in May 2024, and a recent report from the referral laboratory in Mysuru confirmed the presence of harmful substances.
What Was Found in the Tea Powder ?
In 2024, the FDA conducted raids at two places in Nashik, collecting tea samples for testing. Initially, these samples were sent to a laboratory in Pune, which declared them compliant. However, due to lingering suspicion among local officials, the samples were forwarded for further examination to a referral lab in Mysuru. The report, just released, revealed that some of the eight tea samples contained up to 0.23% pesticide traces, and in some cases, even higher levels.
Following this alarming report, state-wide inspections were conducted at the company’s tea warehouses. Large quantities of tea, including popular products like Sahyadri Kadak, Sahyadri Elaichi, Sapat Hotel Dust, and Sapat Parivar Family Mix, were found to contain harmful pesticide levels. Experts warn that consumption of this contaminated tea could lead to serious health issues.
Raids Across Maharashtra
The FDA seized approximately ₹15 lakh worth of tea in Pune, ₹13 lakh in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, ₹37 lakh in Satara, and around ₹1 lakh in Kolhapur.
