Education Department brings uniform schedule across state; Vidarbha schools to run morning shifts initially

The Maharashtra Education Department has announced the school calendar for 2026, introducing key changes in summer vacation dates and reopening schedules across the state. The move aims to bring uniformity in academic planning for all state board schools.

As per the official circular issued by Director of Primary Education Sharad Gosavi and co-signed by Dr Mahesh Palkar, summer vacation for all state board primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools will begin from May 2, 2026, and continue till June 14. The new academic year will commence from June 15, 2026.

This marks a significant shift, especially for the Vidarbha region, where schools traditionally reopened later due to extreme heat conditions. This year, the state has aligned reopening dates across all regions, ensuring that schools in Vidarbha and the rest of Maharashtra resume together.

To address heat concerns, specific provisions have been made for Vidarbha. Schools in the region will operate in the morning shift from June 15 to June 29, with timings from 7:00 AM to 11:45 AM. Regular school timings will resume from June 30.

Officials stated that the decision was taken to maintain consistency in school schedules while also prioritising student safety during high temperatures. The circular has been sent to divisional deputy directors, Zilla Parishad education officers, and school inspectors for implementation.

The administration has instructed schools to make necessary arrangements in advance to ensure a smooth start to the academic year. Authorities believe that a unified academic calendar will help reduce confusion among students, parents, and teachers.

Meanwhile, schools affiliated with other boards such as CBSE and ICSE have been given flexibility to follow their own academic schedules. These institutions may continue with their pre-planned calendars or ongoing academic activities.

The new structure is expected to streamline operations across Maharashtra’s education system while ensuring that regional challenges like heat are managed effectively.
