Maharashtra: Second Tiger Spotted In Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, Marking A Conservation Success
Sahyadri, November 11, 2024: The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) recorded an exciting development last month with the sighting of a second male tiger, affirming the success of conservation efforts in the area. This new tiger, observed on October 28, 2024, has been designated ‘STR-T2,’ joining the first tiger, ‘STR-T1,’ which was recorded in December 2023 after a five-year absence of tigers in the reserve.
The young male, ‘STR-T2,’ was previously spotted in April 2024 in the Radhanagri Wildlife Sanctuary, about 100 kilometers away, and made its way to the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve through a forest corridor. This migration highlights the crucial role of the Sahyadri corridor in providing a safe pathway for wildlife movement and promoting genetic diversity among tiger populations in Maharashtra.
Conservationists and STR officials are celebrating this milestone as a promising indicator of the health of the ecosystem within the reserve. The presence of ‘STR-T1’ and now ‘STR-T2’ suggests that STR is increasingly capable of supporting and sustaining a stable tiger population, adding momentum to ongoing conservation efforts.
STR authorities extended congratulations to all officers, frontline staff, and forest stakeholders who have dedicated efforts to maintaining and improving the reserve’s habitats. The achievement underscores the importance of maintaining secure wildlife corridors and habitats, which are vital to the survival and expansion of tiger populations across the region.
