Maharashtra: State Women's Commission Orders Immediate Action Against Offensive Remark Made Against Jayashree Thorat By Vasantrao Deshmukh
Protests erupted in Sangamner, a town in Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district, following a controversial remark made by BJP leader Vasantrao Deshmukh against Jayshree Thorat, daughter of senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat. The incident occurred on Friday evening during a rally in Dhandarphal village in Sangamner Taluka.
Following the complaint and protest, the State Women Commission president Rupali Chakankar today announced that the local police have initiated investigation in the matter.
“While speaking at a rally in Ahilyanagar, Vasantrao Deshmukh made highly objectionable remarks about Jayashree Thorat. A complaint has been filed, and a police investigation is underway. The State Women’s Commission has taken note of the incident and directed the police to take immediate action and submit a report accordingly, informed Rupali Chakankar, President, State Women’s Commission.
The remark, allegedly disparaging, sparked immediate outrage, particularly among women attendees at the rally, some of whom climbed the stage to demand an apology from Deshmukh. Tensions escalated further as local Congress supporters removed banners of former BJP MP Sujay Vikhe-Patil, a prominent party figure in the region.
Since Friday, women and Congress party supporters in Sangamner have continued to stage protests, condemning the remark. Addressing the incident, Jayshree Thorat expressed disappointment, questioning how a party that advocates for women’s political representation could condone such comments from its members.
“What have I done wrong? I entered politics to support my father, and this level of targeting is disheartening,” she said.
