Weather Alert For January 12: Unseasonal Changes Grip Maharashtra; Rain Likely in Parts, Cold Wave to Persist on January 12
Maharashtra is bracing for a strong cold wave as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for December 1 and 2, warning of a significant drop in minimum temperatures across several districts. The cold wave alert is declared when temperatures fall below normal seasonal averages, signalling harsher winter conditions.
According to IMD, seven districts — Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune and Solapur — are expected to witness cold wave conditions, driven by icy winds flowing from North India.
Cold Wave in Western Maharashtra
Pune and Solapur are among the worst affected, with Pune’s minimum temperature expected to drop to 10°C, leading to an unusually cold spell for residents.
Mumbai Also Turning Colder
Mumbai, too, will experience a dip in temperatures. On December 2, the minimum temperature may fall by 1°C, settling around 15°C, while the maximum is likely to hover near 31°C. Both the city and suburbs will feel an increase in chill.
Severe Chill in North Maharashtra
All five districts in North Maharashtra — Nashik, Jalgaon, Dhule, Nandurbar and Ahmednagar — have been placed under a cold wave yellow alert. Minimum temperatures are expected to drop further to 8–9°C, intensifying the winter chill.
Cold Conditions in Marathwada
Marathwada is also set to experience a cold wave. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, the minimum temperature may reach 12°C, with the rest of the region also witnessing a noticeable decline in mercury levels.
Cloudy and Foggy Weather in Vidarbha
Vidarbha will see cloudy skies and mild fog across districts including Nagpur and Amravati. The minimum temperature in the region will be around 12°C, adding to the cold and breezy conditions.
Advisory for Citizens
Authorities have appealed to residents across Maharashtra to take precautionary measures:
- Wear warm clothing
- Stay hydrated
- Step outdoors only if necessary
With temperatures continuing to fall, the state is expected to remain under a cold grip for the next couple of days.
