Maharashtra Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Predicted For Mumbai and Pune, Red and Orange Warnings Issued Across Multiple Districts

Pune City’s August Rainfall Peaks At 269.8mm, Highest In Ten Years
Maharashtra is set to experience an increase in rainfall intensity, with Mumbai and other regions, including Pune, witnessing continuous heavy rains since last night. The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted heavy rains in some parts of the state and light to moderate rains in many regions for the next five days. A red alert has been issued for Kolhapur district tomorrow, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, an orange alert has been declared for heavy rain in Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Pune, and Satara districts.
Today, August 2, an orange alert has been issued for Konkan and Ghat areas, with a specific red alert for heavy rain in Kolhapur’s Ghat regions. Similarly, a red alert has been issued for Satara district, while an orange alert covers extensive areas of Konkan, Pune, and Nashik district.
The recent spell of heavy rain last week led to flash floods in Pune, Kolhapur, and Sangli, with dams releasing water when they reached full capacity, causing river flooding and affecting local livelihoods. Currently, Pavana dam is 91 percent full, and water release from Amalpatti Dam is expected to increase. If the heavy rain continues, water may also be released from the Khadakwasla dam.
According to Anupam Kashyapi, former IMD head of Pune, Pune’s weather will remain overcast with intermittent moderate to intense rain spells, leading to poor visibility and overall moderate rainfall. The Ghats of Pune district are under a red alert, expecting heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extreme heavy rain. Residents and travelers are advised to avoid visiting the ghats and stay safe.
