A 40-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope in an onion grove on a farm adjacent to Samruddhi Mahamarg in Paathre village in Phase No 2 of the Mumbai Nagpur Samruddhi Highway at around noon on Friday (29th December).

As per information, the man’s car was parked suspiciously on the Mumbai side of the Samruddhi highway for two days. The locals got suspicious and when they informed the police about it, the case of suicide came to light.

Locals thought that the car might have been parked due to a breakdown. However, even after two days, the car remained in the same place which led to the suspicion. Later, when a police official inspected the car, a note was found in a diary kept open on the seat, saying ‘I am committing suicide near home… Police should search…’.

The police started searching for the deceased in Derde Shiwaar. However, due to no whereabouts of the deceased in Derde Shiwaar, the police diverted the investigation from the place where the car was there i.e. to the onion grove in the adjoining farm in Paathre. During the search of the farm, the deceased’s body was found hanging with a rope.

It is worthy to note that nobody from the victim’s family went to the farm for three days as the Yatrotsava of the village deity Shri Khandoba was going on in Pathare village. The police carried out a panchanama which led to the preliminary estimate that the suicide may have occurred two days ago as the body was in a state of decomposition. In the evening, the dead body was handed over to the relatives after being discharged from the rural hospital in Dodi.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) keeps saying that 24-hour patrolling is done for the safety of passengers travelling on the Samruddhi highway. While this is the case, the fact that a person committed suicide on a nearby farm by parking his vehicle on the Samruddhi highway is a question mark on the safety of Samruddhi Mahamarg.
