Before hosting a big event for more than 100 people, like a “mahaprasad,” birthday party, or anything similar, individuals or groups must get FDA approval.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Arjun Bhujbal, Joint Commissioner, FDA Pune, said “This rule is from the beginning. It has been made to avoid the risk of food poisoning. The people’s intentions are good as in hosting a mahaprasad or anything similar, by which they aim to feed other people. But, to avoid food poisoning cases from happening, this rule is mandatory. The approval covers all food safety norms. The FDA has strengthened monitoring regarding the same.”

A senior FDA official said that since few FDA officials or decision-makers ever gave this much thought in the past, many people and organizations are unaware of the necessity of obtaining FDA approval. But now that the FDA is so important to protecting public health, they have made it mandatory for even local party members or political leaders to get their approval before hosting big events like birthday parties. This is because the FDA plays a crucial role in ensuring public health.

The official continued that only quality control and protecting the public from foodborne illnesses require this. If the public’s health is endangered by the distribution of such “mahaprasad” or food without first obtaining FDA approval, there could be serious repercussions. These could include the FDA filing criminal charges or cancelling the registration of the organizing body, such as mandals.
