Man's Best Friend: Stray Dogs Turn Guardians As Stray Pack Protects Abandoned Newborn All Night In West Bengal
An infant left helpless outside a toilet survived the night after stray dogs formed a protective circle, shielding him until locals intervened at dawn.
A newborn baby boy survived a life-threatening night in Nabadwip, West Bengal, after a group of stray dogs stood guard around him, preventing harm and alerting residents to his presence. The infant, only hours old and still bearing birth traces, was found at first light near an outdoor toilet in the Rail Colony area, with no adult in sight and no covering to protect him from the cold.
Locals say the dogs had gathered around the baby throughout the night, forming a silent barrier that kept other animals and possible danger away. Residents later noted that despite being strays, the animals displayed no aggression when people approached—suggesting their instinct had been purely protective.
The discovery came when a local woman noticed the unusual behaviour of the dogs early in the morning and cautiously walked towards them. As she stepped closer, the dogs moved aside, allowing her to reach the infant. She immediately wrapped the baby in her dupatta, called neighbours for help, and alerted local authorities. Within minutes, the newborn was rushed to Maheshganj Hospital and later shifted to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital for specialised care. Doctors say the baby is stable and recovering.

Police have launched an investigation into the abandonment and are working to determine who left the infant outside in such vulnerable conditions. The district child welfare committee has been informed and will take over the long-term care and adoption procedures once medical evaluations are complete.
Residents of the area remain shaken by the incident but deeply moved by the behaviour of the stray dogs. Some locals linked the act of canine vigilance to the town’s spiritual legacy, as Nabadwip is known as the birthplace of 15th-century saint Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who preached compassion for all living beings. By evening, neighbourhood children were seen feeding biscuits to the same dogs, calling them “heroes” who saved a life.
Authorities have urged people to come forward with any information related to the child’s parents. Meanwhile, the emotional incident has sparked public conversation about both infant abandonment and the often-misunderstood instincts of stray dogs, whose protective behaviour in this case proved lifesaving.
