Viral Video Reveals How Chia Seeds Can Obstruct the Food Pipe: Safe Consumption Tips for This Superfood

A recent incident highlighted the risks of consuming dry chia seeds with water, which many consider a harmless health trend. However, a 39-year-old man faced trouble as he had severe choking when the seeds blocked his oesophagus. This incident was shared on Instagram by Dr. Sermed Mezher, who’s a content creator too. The victim could not swallow  and was even vomiting saliva. Ultimately, doctors had to use baby scope to clear the blockage, which took hours to be resolved. 


Let’s Understand the Problems Associated With Chia Seeds

Chia seeds are hydrophilic meaning they have an affinity for water and are soluble. They can absorb up to 10 to 12 times more than their actual weight. Thus, it creates gel that is viscous due to mucilage and creates polysaccharides that are really complex in nature. 

These properties and nature of Chia seeds lead to several risks when consumed with water. Primarily, when the seeds are consumed dry with water, they can quickly expand in the oesophagus, causing problems to swallow. Moreover, painful swallowing, chest pain, and in severe cases, can lead to respiratory problems too. In such cases, quick and instant consultation of doctors is needed especially, inspecting the oesophagus. 

There are effective precautions and safety methods that one should adhere to avoid distress. 

It is effective to soak the chia seeds in water for 5 to 10 minutes before consuming them for sufficient gel formation. Then, one can use chia seeds beverages, smoothies, yoghurt,etc.  instead of consuming them raw. More importantly, consumers should always start with a minimal amount and then increase the intake to adapt to the chia seeds. Finally, be mindful of any distress caused during swallowing and seek healthcare officials’ help when needed to reduce the pain. Initiate having a more healthy and risk-free diet that can add on to your well-being and not deteriorate it.
