Massive Traffic Snarl Brings Pune–Nashik and Talegaon–Chakan Routes to a Standstill
A weekend exodus from villages turned into a nightmare for commuters as long queues of vehicles stretched nearly six kilometers on the Pune–Nashik and Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur routes. Drivers and passengers faced hours of delays, raising frustration among locals and travelers alike. With a surge of vehicles returning to the city, traffic congestion intensified, especially around Chakan, leaving both residents and travelers wondering when normal flow would resume.
Hours-Long Delays on Key Junctions
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., traffic came to a near standstill at Chimbali Phata, Barge Vasti Phata, Kuruli Phata, MIDC Phata, Alandi Phata, Bangla Vasti Chowk, Mutkewadi Phata, Talegaon Chowk, and Ambethan Chowk.
Nearly two lakh vehicles travel daily on the Nashik highway, and Sunday’s surge further worsened the situation. The two-kilometer stretch between Alandi Phata and Talegaon Chowk took an astonishing three to five hours to cross, leaving commuters increasingly frustrated.
Many workers headed to factories in the MIDC area were delayed, unable to reach their workplaces on time due to the heavy congestion.
Proposed Solutions to Ease the Bottleneck
Officials and locals have suggested several measures to prevent such traffic snarls in the future:
- Start new road development projects on the Pune–Nashik highway and Talegaon–Chakan–Shikrapur route.
- Expand the routes by adding one lane on each side.
- Immediately begin roadwork after removing roadside encroachments.
- Clear illegal structures within the MIDC area to free up road space.
- Take action against encroachments by political leaders and their workers.
- Remove large trees obstructing the roadside.
- Relocate electrical transformers and poles close to the road.
Reasons Behind the Gridlock
- High number of vehicles traveling from villages toward Mumbai, Pune, and Nashik.
- Narrow roads caused by encroachments.
- Administrative negligence in traffic management.
- Heavy movement of company vehicles, including containers, trailers, tankers, and buses.
- Drivers frequently violating traffic rules.
