Metros in India need strong bus connectivity to attract people

India’s metro rail network has the potential to greatly benefit urban commuters, but to achieve this, it must be accompanied by a reliable bus and CNG/electric auto rickshaw service, similar to what has been implemented in Delhi and Noida.

A strong public bus service, similar to Mumbai, is also crucial to serve commuters in the suburbs and areas not linked by the metro network. The effectiveness of a metro network is greatly influenced by the quality of the bus service, as buses are responsible for transporting passengers to the metro stations. Pune’s lack of a reliable mass transportation system has led to a high number of two-wheelers in the city. However, the implementation of a metro network and an efficient public bus service can significantly decrease these numbers.

The ongoing ‘Bus Mitra’ campaign by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) aims to unite all parties involved for the collective benefit of providing the residents of Pune with an improved bus service. This campaign is led by a group of enthusiastic and youthful volunteers who are striving to improve public transport infrastructure.

The reckless driving of both two-wheelers and four-wheelers poses a dangerous inconvenience to pedestrians and bus commuters in Pune. The feedback survey highlighted the concerns of women commuters, emphasizing the importance of having more frequent and reliable bus services, as well as the necessity for clean and well-maintained buses.

It is imperative for the PMPML to address these issues promptly and implement measures to significantly decrease the occurrence of bus breakdowns on a daily basis.
