There are moments in life when we must say goodbye — not because we want to, but because time or tradition asks us to. Whether it’s a loved one leaving for a journey, the end of a beautiful chapter, or the conclusion of a cherished celebration, farewells are often filled with both sorrow and hope. Such is the spirit behind the immersion of Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi.

It is not just a goodbye — it is a promise of return. As devotees chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!” (Hail Lord Ganesha, come back soon next year!), they bid farewell to their beloved deity with folded hands, misty eyes, and hearts full of devotion.

The celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi begins with the joyful installation of the idol and ends with the emotional ritual of visarjan (immersion). According to tradition, Lord Ganesha returns to his celestial abode after blessing his devotees for several days. The immersion typically takes place on the tenth day, known as Anant Chaturdashi, though many observe it after 1, 3, 5, or 7 days, depending on their family customs.

Before immersion, devotees perform final rituals and prayers, including uttar puja, seeking Lord Ganesha’s permission for the farewell. These rituals mark the transition from celebration to departure — but always with the assurance that Ganesha will return.

This year, one visarjan video stood out and quickly went viral. In it, a man is seen performing the immersion in a river with a strong current. But unexpectedly, the idol of Lord Ganesha doesn’t drift away. Despite the flow of the water, it remains perfectly still, almost as if refusing to leave.

The moment left many stunned. Was it a miracle? A sign? Or a symbol of divine connection between the devotee and the deity?

Online reactions poured in. Some called it a clear miracle — a spiritual occurrence that reflects the power of faith. Others viewed it as a sign that true devotion can even pause the natural flow of life. A few suggested practical reasons, like the weight or design of the idol, but the overwhelming response was filled with awe and emotion.

Mumbai, despite heavy rains, came alive with processions, dhol-tasha beats, and clouds of colorful gulal. The streets echoed with the full-hearted chant, “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya!” — not just a goodbye, but an invitation, a longing, and a promise.

Whether one believes it was a miracle or a moment of coincidence, the image of the idol refusing to float away remains etched in the hearts of many. It reminded everyone that devotion isn’t just in rituals — it’s in the emotional bond that makes even a farewell feel like a beginning.
