MMRDA Begins Work on Elevated Road Linking Ghatkopar to Thane: Travel Time to Drop to 35 Minutes
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started work on a new elevated road between Ghatkopar and Thane. The 12.955-km corridor will provide a completely signal-free route from Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar in Thane.
Once completed, the new road will reduce travel time to just 30–35 minutes. It will pass directly over the busy Eastern Express Highway, with three lanes on each side. This major project is expected to ease daily traffic for thousands of commuters.
The elevated road will also connect smoothly to the existing 16.8-km Eastern Freeway. The freeway starts from PD Mello Road near CSMT and ends at Chheda Nagar. While it has helped reduce congestion in South Mumbai, traffic often slows down around Mankhurd and further north. The new link aims to fix this issue by offering an uninterrupted route to Thane.
Construction work has already begun. Excavation and pillar work are in progress, and barricades have been placed for public safety. Parts of the project are now visible to commuters along the route.
One of the key achievements of this project has been the fast land acquisition process. The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) played a major role by swiftly relocating 1,694 slum units in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar. This helped avoid delays and cleared the way for faster construction.
In a first, the MMRDA will also take charge of redeveloping the slum cluster, ensuring smooth progress of the project.
The new corridor is set to transform travel between South Mumbai and Thane, offering a faster and more comfortable ride.
