Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy recently shared a poignant personal anecdote during a UN event, shedding light on his experience of hunger while hitchhiking in Europe five decades ago.

Speaking at the event hosted by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN, Murthy recounted a moment from his journey where he endured 120 hours without food, particularly recalling his time at the border town of Nish between Bulgaria and Yugoslavia (now Serbia).

His narrative highlighted the profound impact of hunger and underscored the urgent need for global efforts to address food insecurity.

In his address, Murthy emphasized the importance of expressing gratitude towards the nation and supporting initiatives aimed at providing education for underprivileged children.

Reflecting on his own journey, he acknowledged the role of subsidized education provided by the Indian government in shaping the lives of many individuals, including himself. He called upon attendees to recognize the privilege they have received and to contribute towards ensuring a better future for the next generation by supporting educational initiatives for marginalized communities.

The UN event, titled “Achievements in Food Security: India’s Strides Towards Sustainable Development Goals,” marked a significant milestone in India’s efforts to combat hunger. It celebrated the remarkable achievement of the four billionth meal served by The Akshaya Patra Foundation, an Indian NGO dedicated to addressing food insecurity.

Murthy’s personal story served as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by millions around the world and highlighted the importance of collective action in achieving sustainable development goals and creating a more equitable future for all.
