The Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (MSCERT) has decided to remove references to the Manusmriti from its syllabus, following substantial opposition from various quarters. This decision comes after the Union Ministry of Education had initially included references from the controversial text in the upcoming academic year’s curriculum.

The move sparked significant backlash, with social activists, educators, and concerned citizens voicing strong objections. As a result, the MSCERT has opted to revise the syllabus in response to over 4,000 objections and suggestions received. The final curriculum will be aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), which aims to integrate elements of Indian knowledge systems, including ancient traditions and texts.

The original plan, which had proposed incorporating recitations from Manusmriti alongside other Indian philosophical texts like the Bhagavad Gita, faced criticism for its religious overtones. This controversy escalated into a political issue, prompting protests and calls for the exclusion of such references from the educational framework.

In light of the widespread opposition, MSCERT Director Rahul Rekhawar announced, “We are reviewing every objection and suggestion carefully. The syllabus will be finalized and submitted to the steering committee, with the Manusmriti references being removed.” The revised curriculum is expected to better reflect the diverse perspectives of the educational community.
