A 65-year-old diamond merchant from South Mumbai, Sanjay Shah, allegedly died by suicide on Sunday morning, July 21, by jumping into the Arabian Sea near the Gateway of India.
This incident follows a similar tragedy just days earlier, where a Ghatkopar resident ended his life by jumping off the Worli-Bandra sea link on July 17 due to business losses.
Shah lived with his family at Sheela Apartments on Bhulabhai Desai Road, Mahalaxmi. On the day of the incident, he left home around 7 am, telling his wife he was going for a walk. He initially directed a taxi to take him to the Worli-Bandra sea link, intending to immerse pooja articles. The cab driver, however, refused to stop there due to restrictions and potential fines.
Shah then redirected the cab to the Gateway of India, arriving by 9.30 am, where he subsequently jumped into the sea. Despite rescue efforts by the fire brigade and police, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at St George’s Hospital.
Police investigations revealed Shah’s substantial business losses, amounting to Rs 97 crore, which led to his depression. The Colaba police have registered a case of accidental death and are continuing their investigation.
