Mumbai Imposes Plastic Bag Ban; BMC Introduces Fines of Up to Rs 25000

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has banned the use of plastic bags in the entire city for environmental conservation.

As per information, citing protection & preservation of the environment, the BMC has banned plastic bag use in the city. Strict action will be taken against defaulters. People like shopkeepers, vegetable vendrs, hawkers, malls, etc will be on the radar of the police.

During interrogation, if plastic bags are found with them, strict action will be taken and a hefty fine of Rs 5000 will be imposed as a first time offender. The further fines would be Rs 10,000 and 25,000 respectively for repetitive offences. If customers/common citizens are found with plastic bags, awareness will be created regarding the harmful effects of plastic usage on the environment etc & strict action will be imposed.

It is worthy to note that the BMC was taking strict action frequently in Mumbai before.

However, due to the Covid pandemic, it wasn’t conducted seriously. But the BMC has started taking strict action again against the usage of plastic bags.
