Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a partial stretch of Mumbai’s ambitious coastal road project on February 19, marking a significant step in the city’s urban infrastructure.

The section from Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli to Marine Drive will be opened to the public on February 20, allowing easier connectivity from Bandra Worli Sea Link to Marine Drive.

This Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) project boasts a four-lane road, and notably, it features the country’s first undersea tunnel spanning 2.072 km. Over 84% of the major works on the 10.58 km-long project have been completed, with the remaining set to meet its May deadline.

The comprehensive development includes addressing the concerns of local fishermen affected by the project, a 7.5 km-long promenade and cycle track, and underground parking plots. Additionally, 70 hectares of green spaces on reclaimed land will contribute to the city’s environmental aesthetics, all scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

As of January 23, significant progress has been made, with 97% of reclamation work, 84% of the sea wall, 85.5% of interchanges, and 83% of bridge-related work already accomplished.

The entire project, spanning from Marine Drive to Dahisar, is estimated to cost Rs. 27,400 crore. BMC commissioner Iqbal S Chahal affirms that work orders for the entire stretch have been issued, signaling the commitment to this transformative urban development initiative.
