MSRDC’s ₹6,080 crore proposal aims to reduce congestion and enhance safety on Maharashtra’s busiest expressway.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has proposed expanding the Mumbai-Pune Expressway to eight lanes to address the surging traffic and safety concerns. Currently accommodating 155,000 vehicles daily, the existing six-lane highway struggles with frequent traffic jams and accidents, making the upgrade essential.
Project Details
The expansion project is planned in two phases:
• Phase 1: Widening roads and bridges.
• Phase 2: Expanding tunnels.
Land acquisition for Phase 1 is already complete, simplifying the process to begin construction. Phase 2 land acquisition is also expected to proceed smoothly. Once approved, the project is slated for completion by 2028-29.
Funding and Approval Status
The MSRDC submitted the detailed proposal to the state government in February 2024, but it is still awaiting approval. The funding options include either a state budget allocation or an extension of the toll collection period on the expressway. MSRDC remains optimistic about starting the work soon.
Expected Impact
The eight-lane expansion will reduce congestion, improve travel times, and enhance safety, ensuring a smoother experience for commuters traveling between Mumbai and Pune.
