On the 54 km Pune-Mumbai Expressway stretch from Kiwale exit to Amrutanjan Point, the Highway State Police’s (HSP) Pune unit reported a nearly 4% decrease in speeding incidents in 2022 compared to the previous year. However, its officials attributed this largely to drivers using illegal cell phone applications to avoid speed cameras and interceptor vehicles, in addition to roadblocks imposed for maintenance.

There are numerous illegal applications that display the locations of speed CCTV cameras and interceptor vehicles on roads, according to a senior Highway State Police official. Drivers reduce their speed to the appropriate speed limits as they approach these locations. The speed limit on the expressway is 80 kmph.

According to HSP data, there were 28 victims and 1,54,655 speeding cases in 2022. In 2023, there were 26 victims and 1,48,939 speeding cases—a slight decrease from the previous year.

The HSP official added that although they frequently move the locations of interceptor vehicles, these changes regrettably also show up in these applications. The blocks made by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) authorities for expressway repair work is another factor that is reducing the number of speeding cases.
