Taking pictures of strangers without their consent has sparked outrage after a video from Mumbai’s Marine Drive went viral, showing a young woman confronting a man she accused of secretly filming and photographing her and another woman. According to her, the incident came to light when a passerby noticed the man’s actions and alerted her. Upon checking his phone, she discovered recent photos and videos of herself and another woman.
The video, shared on Instagram by user @themrunalshelke, captures the woman directly questioning the man, who identified himself as Rajiv, about his behavior. “Aap mere Papa ki umar ke ho. Why did you take a photo of me?” she asked him on his actions.
At first, the man described the pictures as “just casual shots,” before later saying, “I apologise, this won’t happen again.” The woman continued to press him, asking who gave him permission to take photos of strangers and whether he had been recording videos as well. She also demanded, “Delete all the images you have of us immediately.”
Sharing the incident on Instagram, the woman explained her motivation for confronting him publicly. “A stranger’s alert helped me discover a man, the age of my father, secretly recording photos and videos of me. I confronted him myself and saw the evidence firsthand,” she wrote. She highlighted that women shouldn’t have to stay constantly alert in crowded places. “Even when we’re just enjoying the ocean, we shouldn’t have to be on guard. Yet this is the reality we face. It’s disturbing that even in busy public spaces, people treat us like objects for their own collections,” she added.
She also underlined why she chose to make the confrontation public. “I wanted to share something that happened today at Marine Drive I caught a man the age of my father secretly taking inappropriate photos and videos of me thanks to a kind stranger who alerted me I was able to confront him and see the evidence myself. We shouldn’t have to be ‘on guard’ while looking at the ocean, but this is our reality. It is sickening that even in a crowded public space we are treated like objects for someone’s ‘’collection’’ I made sure he was shamed in public. I’m sharing this not to ruin the vibe of my feed but to remind you that this is happening in our favorite spots don’t be afraid to make a scene Don’t be afraid to demand their phone your privacy is worth more than anything. I’m posting this in the hopes that it reaches his family and the people who think they know him,” she wrote.
Online reactions showed widespread condemnation. One user commented, “Absolutely right to call it out. That behavior is creepy and illegal age is no excuse. Speaking up is how public spaces stay safe.”
