A recent social media revelation about a neighbourhood dry-cleaning business earning over ₹2 lakh per month has taken the internet by surprise, igniting conversations about income, taxation, and unconventional career choices. Content creator Nalini Unagar shared her encounter with the couple who run a dry-cleaning shop near her residence, detailing their impressive earnings and operational setup.

According to Unagar, the business is managed jointly by the husband and wife, with the support of two salaried assistants. Her post captured the shock many felt upon learning the shop’s monthly income, highlighting how a small-scale service venture can rival the earnings of seasoned professionals.

“Yesterday, I was chatting with the owners of the dry-cleaning shop I frequently visit. Both of them work together, and they employ two helpers. I couldn’t believe it when they told me they make around ₹2,00,000 per month, which is comparable to a software engineer with over a decade of experience,” she shared.

Unagar also provided a detailed explanation of the couple’s earnings. The shop reportedly handles about 350 garments each day at ₹10 per item, generating approximately ₹3,500 daily. Additionally, around 20 premium items such as suits, cholis, and high-end sarees are dry-cleaned and ironed at ₹350 each, adding roughly ₹7,000 per day.

This brings the estimated total daily revenue to ₹10,500. Operating all but three days each month, their projected monthly turnover reaches ₹2,83,500.

Notably, the couple owns the shop premises, eliminating rental expenses. The only reported costs include an electricity bill of around ₹6,000 and ₹40,000 in combined salaries for their two assistants. After accounting for these expenses, the couple reportedly takes home a net profit of approximately ₹2,37,500.

“They mentioned these figures are from last month, but on average, they consistently earn ₹2 lakh or more each month,” Unagar added.

The post quickly gained traction online, sparking a wave of reactions. One user humorously compared the couple’s income with that of IT professionals: “Meanwhile, engineers are debugging code at 2 AM for ₹2L a month… and bhaiya is ironing wrinkles in 2 minutes for the same salary. Moral of the story: Should’ve learned ‘steam engineering’ instead of software engineering.”

Others raised taxation concerns, “Most importantly, they don’t pay tax on that profit/income! 80% of India is like this (at a different scale of profit, of course!). Even if half of them pay ‘nominal’ tax, that would reduce the burden on others who are lifting the entire society today!!”

Several users reflected on career choices and the value of entrepreneurship, “The real lesson isn’t ‘quit IT and open a shop.’ It’s this: Income is not proportional to education. It’s proportional to value captured,” one comment noted.

Another shared a broader perspective on fulfilling work, “We’re conditioned to run after white-collar jobs and fixed paychecks, but stories like this remind us that owning a business—small or big—can be equally rewarding, and sometimes far more fulfilling, when done with genuine passion. Appreciate you sharing this perspective.”

Some reactions were lighter and humorous, “Now IT will raid him & laundry owners will curse you,” a user joked, referencing the couple’s sudden viral fame.
