Safety concerns surrounding ride-hailing services have resurfaced after a troubling incident reported by a woman in Mumbai’s Dadar area. What began as a routine cab booking quickly turned into an unsettling experience, prompting questions about passenger protection and platform accountability.
According to the commuter, she had booked an Uber ride while heading back after shopping. The driver accepted the trip and appeared to be barely 100 metres away. Soon after confirming the ride, he reached out via the app’s chat feature, asking her to share her precise location, which she did without hesitation.
Moments later, the tone of the conversation reportedly shifted in an inappropriate direction. The driver allegedly sent her a message asking her to “become his friend,” adding that he would only come to pick her up if she agreed, claiming he was emotionally distressed. The unexpected message left the woman stunned and deeply uncomfortable.
Recalling the moment, she said, “Is this some kind of low-grade dating platform? I was just standing there, completely shocked.” She noted that the message came in at approximately 8:58 pm.
The woman has preserved screenshots of the exchange, which reportedly display the driver’s name along with the vehicle details, as proof of the incident.
Beyond her personal experience, she highlighted a larger issue of safety, especially for women using such services. She questioned whether similar behaviour might be happening to other passengers and urged Uber India to take strict action. She also stressed the need for better monitoring of driver communications within the app.
Incident has sparked fresh debate about the effectiveness of existing safety measures on ride-hailing platforms. As more users rely on these services for daily travel, ensuring professional conduct and swift accountability remains critical. Without stronger oversight, such incidents risk eroding trust and leaving passengers feeling vulnerable instead of secure.
