Pune MP and Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, recently met Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, to discuss strategies aimed at preventing accidents in the accident-prone Navale Bridge area on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway.

Sharing details on X (formerly Twitter), Mohol stated, “Today, I met Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to discuss both short-term and long-term measures to be implemented through the National Highways Authority to prevent accidents in the Navale Bridge area.”

The meeting comes in the wake of a tragic accident last Thursday, which claimed eight lives and left 13 people injured. In response, local authorities have already taken immediate action, including reducing the speed limit in this stretch to 30 km per hour and accelerating the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Jambhulwadi–Warje ring road.

During the discussion, Mohol highlighted the need for continued efforts to address both existing and potential risks. Gadkari responded positively, assuring that appropriate steps would be undertaken to enhance road safety in the region.

Several measures have been proposed and are underway to improve conditions on this highway. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been tasked with inspecting heavy vehicles for overloading, brake failures, and other mechanical issues at the Khed-Shivapur toll plaza. Authorities are also working on increasing the number of reflectors along the road and establishing designated PMPML bus bays to prevent overcrowding and reduce the risk of accidents.

Following the recent accident, a joint meeting of officials from the National Highways Authority, Pune Municipal Corporation, and local police was held to discuss immediate safety measures. The outcomes of this meeting have now been communicated to Minister Gadkari, ensuring that both short-term fixes and long-term infrastructural improvements are prioritized.
